Description
Water permeability describes the ease with which water can drain through a soil profile. Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) is a numerical property that describes water permeability. Soils that permeate water slowly (Ksat 100µm/s) may drain water too quickly resulting in water not being retained for plant use. Moderate and fast permeating soils provide naturally balanced levels of water drainage and retention. Ksat data from the SSURGO database was used to classify permeability based on modified classes from the NRCS Field Book for Describing and Sampling Soils (Slow < 3, Moderate =3 to <10, Fast = 10 to <100, and Very Fast ≥ 100 µm/s).
